Joie’s Story
Resilience in the Face of Life’s Challenges
Joie married the love of her life, James Oren Largent, in November 1979. They were filled with dreams of a beautiful future together. Tragically, only months later, on April 1, 1980, James was killed in a car accident…a devastating loss that left Joie as a young widow, newly pregnant with their first child.
Joie’s parents, Thomas William Dover and Virginia Goff Dover, stepped in to provide unwavering love and support. Thomas, a beloved elementary school principal and musician, brought wisdom, kindness, and stability into Joie’s life, helping her raise her daughter, Jennie Len. Virginia, with her quiet and determined strength, ensured Joie never felt alone in her grief. Together, they formed a small but mighty family unit built on resilience, love, respect, and faith.
In 1992, when Thomas passed away suddenly from cancer, Joie’s world was shaken once more. With rising crime in their Houston neighborhood, Joie made the bold decision to move to Conroe, Texas, blending two households into one in a home surrounded by the beauty of Southeast Texas pine trees. This home became her sanctuary - and the only place she felt safe.
But life continued to test Joie’s strength. The loss of her mother in 2006, combined with Jennie’s move out of state, left Joie isolated and grieving deeply. Over time, her physical and mental health declined. Multiple strokes, surgeries, and other medical complications have made daily life increasingly difficult. Yet through it all, Joie has remained determined to stay in the home where she built her life.
Joie’s Path to Healing is Through You
Today, Joie’s home is in dire need of repair, and she requires medical and daily living assistance to ensure her safety and comfort. Her story is one of perseverance and independence, but now, she needs the support of others to carry her through this chapter.

Important Information:
Joie has a variety of needs.
For her mental and physical comfort, it is essential that she remains in her home environment.
If you have a different perspective on this approach, Jennie, her daughter, is more than willing to discuss alternative suggestions and is open to exploring other possibilities.
State and local resources have been unsuccessful in their efforts to remove Joie from her home. Texas Adult Protective Services, which has maintained a file on her since the early 2010s, is well aware of both the home's condition and Joie’s health.
While some may describe Joie as eccentric with unconventional priorities, she is remarkably sharp and consistently articulates her wishes with clarity.
When Rene, the owner of Lake Conroe Pest Control, encountered the situation, she was shocked and immediately felt compelled to take action. She took the initiative to coordinate repair services, presenting a promising alternative worth pursuing.
Rather than forcing Joie out of her home (an action that would cause her immense distress)…what if we pooled our resources to support her and improve her living conditions?

Neighbors and Volunteers Lending a Hand
Joie and Jennie Len are both deeply grateful for the compassionate individuals and local professionals who have stepped forward to support Joie during this challenging time.
When Lake Conroe Pest Control was called out for what seemed like a routine work order, they were deeply moved by the conditions they encountered. Rene Crawford, the owner, immediately took action, rallying business partners in the community to come together and assist a woman in need. Brad Briggs, from Texas Engineered Roofing, donated hours of effort, materials, and labor to repair the critical structural damage.
TEXAS SIZED THANK YOU TO:
To Everyone Giving Their Energy…
Joie Is Genuinely Grateful for You
A Ripple Becomes a Wave
Sometimes, life reminds us that it only takes one person to ignite something big. For years, Joie’s home stood battered…weathering storm after storm, each blow leaving its mark. Pine trees crashed onto the roof. Water found its way inside. The weight of repairs loomed, but resources were nonexistent.
Then, a few people looked beyond the damage. They saw Joie’s willful determination to stay in her home and the opportunity to help make that possible. They acted…not just with tools and time, but with energy, respect, belief, and love. And something incredible happened: more people showed up.
Energy Moves Mountains
This isn’t just about fixing a roof or patching walls. Every person who has lifted, hauled, hammered, donated, or simply spread the word has been part of something much bigger than they may ever realize. You didn’t just contribute effort; you infused this space with hope, renewal, and care.
And while the work isn’t finished yet, there’s so much to celebrate.
A Celebration of Thanks
Joie (and many friends) want to thank you in the best way they can…with an afternoon of music, community, and healing. No strings attached or any obligation to donate further. Just bring yourself, your energy, and your friends!
Let’s celebrate the power of showing up. ❤️

Let’s Rewrite Joie’s Final Chapters
Joie’s Health
Joie has faced more than her fair share of health battles. Over the years, she has suffered multiple strokes, undergone several gastrointestinal surgeries, and continues to live with a serious heart condition, among many other health complications that significantly limit her mobility.
Daily life presents constant challenges…she requires assistance with everything from personal housekeeping and meal preparation to managing her complex medical needs.
Limited Resources
Joie receives the maximum support available through state assistance, including monthly disability income, basic medical insurance, and a short-term aide who visits twice a week (will end within 4 weeks).
However, no additional resources are readily available to her. Because she owns her home (though she still has a mortgage) she is ineligible for further government aid.
A Life-Changing Connection
Thanks to Rene Crawford, who led this healing initiative, Joie now has a dedicated and compassionate support team identified. Mandy, in particular, has already formed a bond with Joie, offering both friendship and critical daily assistance that has the power to change the way her story ends.
Rene has generously self-funded this care to meet Joie’s immediate needs. However, by the date of this fundraiser, those funds will be depleted.
How You Can Help
Every dollar donated will go directly toward Joie’s essential care, including:
Home health services for daily living support
Meal preparation to ensure proper nutrition
Medical management and mobility assistance
Without additional support, Joie will lose access to the care she urgently needs to maintain her health and dignity. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a real and immediate difference.
Thank you for being part of Joie’s support system. Your generosity isn’t just appreciated—it’s lifesaving.
Every dollar (and prayer) counts.
Mama, I added pink here for you! Love you always, your Boog.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Joie and her daughter, Jennie, share a close and supportive relationship. However, Joie’s independence has always been central to her identity, and living in her own home allows her to maintain that independence. Additionally, Jennie lives in a small home in Portland, Oregon, with her husband, dog, and cat. Jennie is currently building her consulting business, while her husband works as an HR Director for a behavioral health facility. Given these circumstances, relocating Joie to Portland is not feasible, and her specific care needs are better addressed in her current environment.
-
Facilities can be an option for some, but they are not always the best solution. Joie has PTSD due to past trauma, and her mental and emotional well-being are closely tied to her home environment, where she feels safest and most secure. Moving Joie to a facility could exacerbate her stress and negatively impact her overall health. Furthermore, many facilities are not equipped to meet her unique needs or preferences, making her current home the best option with the right support in place.
-
Joie has faced several challenges over the years, including health issues and financial constraints, which made it difficult to maintain the home. The deterioration happened gradually, compounded by limited access to adequate resources and support.
-
State and local agencies are aware of Joie’s situation and have been involved over the years. However, systemic limitations, such as resource shortages and rigid processes, have prevented a long-term solution. Despite their involvement, the unique nature of Joie’s case has left many needs unmet.
-
There are challenges, but steps are being taken to address safety concerns, including repairs, pest removal, and medical support. With these efforts, Joie’s home can be made safe and comfortable, allowing her to remain in the environment she knows and values.
-
Jennie is actively involved in supporting her mother but cannot address all the complex issues alone. Joie’s situation requires a community effort due to the scope of the repairs, medical care, and resources needed to ensure her safety and well-being.
-
Joie’s extended family is no longer alive, leaving Jennie as her sole advocate and support system. While Jennie has supported Joie as much as possible, she faces financial and time limitations that prevent her from addressing all of Joie’s complex needs alone. This is why community support is so essential in helping Joie remain safe and comfortable in her home
-
Maintaining independence is vital for Joie’s mental and emotional health. It gives her a sense of purpose and control over her life, even as she navigates significant challenges. The goal is to balance her independence with the support she needs to thrive.
-
Every dollar and resource contributed is going directly to Joie’s immediate needs and the restoration of her home. No funds will be spent on anything that does not directly support her health, safety, and well-being as she approaches the end of her life. Transparency is a top priority, and all efforts are focused on ensuring Joie can live out her remaining years with dignity and comfort.
